Accomplishments
As a champion
for safe and healthy children Peter introduced:
- Oregon’s first
law allowing legal surrender of newborns to police and hospitals.
- Oregon’s first
law requiring medical insurers to cover food supplements for babies
with phenylketonuria (PKU), which can cause brain damage without proper
nutrition.
- Oregon’s first
law requiring transport of critically ill or injured children to trauma
centers.
- Oregon’s first
law requiring background checks for school staff and volunteers.
- Oregon’s first
law requiring neighbors to be notified if sex offenders live nearby.
As President of the
Senate, Peter presided over the most successful special session in Oregon
history. Under his leadership, the legislature passed and the Governor
signed:
- A bill increasing punishment
for criminals found guilty of crimes against Oregon children.
- A bill providing much needed
increases in state funding for Oregon’s K-12 schools.
- A bill providing greater
consumer protection and regulation of Oregon payday loan institutions.
