Peter
on the Issues
Peter
is committed to building the best school system in the United States
- Educating
our children is the best investment that our state can make for the
future. As an Oregon legislator, Peter has continually fought to ensure
Oregon schools are appropriately funded. Reducing academic standards
is not an option!
- Peter is pushing
for more technical and vocational training so students can succeed whether
they go to college or straight to a career.
- Peter believes
strongly in the benefits of after-school programs to provide safe and
constructive alternatives to alcohol, drugs and violence.
Peter believes government
has the responsibility to provide access to affordable health care for
all Oregonians:
- Peter understands the impact
of a serious illness on a family. From the time he was a young boy,
his mother struggled with Parkinson’s disease. This is one reason he
has been a champion of health care for families, children and seniors.
- Peter led the effort to
require insurance companies to cover prostate and colon cancer screenings.
- Peter was an original author
of the Oregon Health Plan which prevents 400,000 low-income Oregonians
from choosing between medical attention and putting food on the table.
Peter is committed
to ensuring a safe community for Oregon children:
- Peter introduced sex offender
notification legislation, so that families know when a dangerous convicted
sex offender moves into their neighborhood.
- Peter worked to increase
parental peace of mind by passing a law requiring criminal background
checks for all teachers, volunteers and others responsible for supervising
children.
- Peter worked to increase
health care opportunities for Oregon’s youth by authoring Oregon’s first
law requiring transport of critically ill or injured children to trauma
centers.
- Peter has and will continue
to lead the fight against the use of dangerous performance enhancing
drugs by Oregon children.
Peter is committed
to ensuring a high quality-of-life for Oregon’s seniors:
- Peter believes seniors
and people with disabilities should have the opportunity to remain in
their own homes. He has voted to protect homecare services for seniors
and people with disabilities to preserve their dignity.
- Peter created the program
that offers seniors on fixed incomes discounts on prescription drugs.
The health of Oregon’s seniors is more important than profits for drug
corporations.
